Chevrolet on Tuesday at Daytona International Speedway revealed the first of Grand-Am's third-generation Rolex Series Daytona Prototypes.
The new cars might not turn out to be much quicker than their predecessors - DPs retain most of the existing suspension, drivetrain and electronics--but most observers should find them more visually appealing. The Corvette DP takes advantage of new regulations allowing for "more potential for brand character and design." Highlights of the new rules include a smaller greenhouse, a more upright nose and a higher tail.
The Corvette Daytona Prototype is scheduled to test at Daytona on Nov. 16, with Corvette Racing's American Le Mans Series drivers Oliver Gavin and Antonio García sharing duty in a car fielded by the Spirit of Daytona Racing team. The car's competitive debut is slated for the Rolex 24 at the same track Jan. 28-29. Four teams will campaign the car in 2012: Spirit of Daytona (one car), SunTrust Racing (one), Gainsco/Bob Stallings Racing (one) and Action Express Racing (two).
"Racing and performance are the founding principles of Chevrolet...

An eight-car crash on the Nürburgring Nordschleife earlier today sent one driver to the hospital with serious injuries, claimed a rented Corvette Z06 and put one of the new BMW M3 "ring taxis" out of commission. It also caused more than $130,000 in property damage.
According to police, the accident occurred at around 2:00 pm local time on the circuit's tricky Bergwerk ("mine") section as three cars were slowing for a construction zone. A fourth driver, from the UK, stood on the brakes but couldn't prevent a collision with one of the vehicles ahead. He subsequently slid onto the grass and then back onto the track some fifty meters (164ft) ahead. It was there where he crashed into the other two vehicles.

An article about the C6 Corvette and the coming C7 redesign hit Bloomberg’s news wire over the weekend and there were some interesting quotes from GM insiders both named and unnamed. Former VP of Product Development Bob Lutz, who helped usher the Corvette ZR1 from pipe dream to Nurburgring terror is back in company’s fold as a consultant and we get to hear his thoughts on the coming next-generation Corvette.
The Bloomberg article sets up the notion that the C6 Corvette is in a sales funk that started with the global automotive recession in 2008. The premise the article makes is that the market for $50,000-$100,000 sports cars will return but not to Corvette as long as the car appeals only to the baby boomer demographic of buyers who are 50 years or older. For the C7 Corvette to break out and sell to a younger generation, GM needs to refashion the Corvette to make it more appealable to younger buyers.

The Corvette turned 60 this year and it seems that the majority of its target audience did exactly the same thing. The Corvette, long an American tradition and the true American sports car, has seen its audience grow older, and it seems that Chevrolet is beginning to get anxious about this. With this in mind, Chevrolet has decided to make direct and immediate steps with the next generation of their flagship vehicle to move it towards a new group of buyers. What is this group? Why, a younger one of course.
Based upon the popularity that the European sports car currently holds with the professional demographics in their 20's and 30's, it seems that Chevrolet will be making changes to move the Corvette in the direction of the Porsche, BMW, Ferrari, and Lamborghini. Finding and securing a younger fan-base is paramount to the long-term survival of the Corvette, whose style and badge alone have guaranteed it a place in the hearts of many customers already.

Chevrolet’s brawny plastic-bodied two-seater has long been a dream machine for countless enthusiasts. Today, that dream is more in reach than ever. The fourth generation or “C4″ version of these cars are absolute steals on used-car lots.
These potent performers made their debut for 1984, replacing the soft, boulevardier 1968-82 “Shark” design. With vastly improved aerodynamics and extensive use of aluminum in its construction, the C4 was enormously more capable than its predecessor.
Throughout the C4’s long production run, practically every model year brought significant improvements...
